Ta budowla o białych ścianach to późnorenesansowy kościół farny pw. Wniebowzięcia NMP w Białymstoku. Jego budowę ukończono w 1626 r. Jest to jednonawowa świątynia z wieżą na osi fasady, o oszkarpowanych ścianach zewnętrznych. W czasach Jana Klemensa Branickiego dokonano przebudowy świątyni, zmieniając jej wystrój. Na początku XX wieku istniejącą świątynię rozbudowano poprzez dobudowę do niej w części prezbiterialnej nowej wielkiej katedry w stylu neogotyckim autorstwa Józefa Piusa Dziekońskiego. Na terenie Podlasia będącego pod zaborem rosyjskim wzniesiono wówczas wiele neogotyckich wielkich świątyń jedno - lub dwuwieżowych, o rozbudowanej bryle, którym nadawano kształty bardzo reprezentacyjne, wręcz manifestujące polskość i katolicyzm.
