Budynek obecnie zajmowany przez Ośrodek Edukacji Przyrodniczej BPN, jest najstarszym budynkiem w polskiej części Puszczy Białowieskiej. Wybudowany został w 1845 r. u podnóża wyniesienia na którym umiejscowiony był niegdyś dwór Augusta II Sasa. Budynek został wzniesiony w stylu rosyjsko - szwajcarskim z przeznaczeniem na potrzeby administracji rządowej gubernatora grodzieńskiego. Był do końca lat 80 - tych XIX wieku największym i najbardziej okazałym budynkiem w Białowieży. To tu przebywał car Aleksander II podczas polowania w Puszczy Białowieskiej. Było to w dniach 5 - 7 października 1860 r.
