Żydzi osiedlili się w Wysokiem Mazowieckiem w XVII wieku. Od drugiej połowy XIX wieku ludność żydowska stanowiła większość mieszkańców miasta, przyczyniając się do jego rozwoju gospodarczego i kulturalnego. W okresie okupacji niemieckiej w sierpniu 1941 roku, żydzi z Wysokiego Mazowieckiego zostali zmuszeni do osiedlenia się w getcie. Dnia 2 listopada 1942 roku getto zostało zlikwidowane; 2000 jego mieszkańców wywieziono do obozu pracy w Zambrowie, a po jego likwidacji w styczniu 1943 roku - do Auschwitz.
