W pewną lipcową noc, 1989roku pierwszy raz spojrzałem na nią przez wielki teleskop. Pamiętam jakie wrażenie robiło jej pół miliona gwiazd, gęsto upakowanych w kuli o średnicy 149 lat świetlnych. Nieliczni szczęściarze, którzy mogli ją podziwiać przez potężne instrumenty o 4-metrowej średnicy luster byli pełni zachwytu nad niezwykłym widokiem. Można się zastanawiać, jakby wyglądało nasze niebo, gdyby Słońce znajdowało się np. na peryferiach takiej gromady. Moglibyśmy podziwiać wschód obiektu złożonego z mrowia gwiazd, wypełniającego 1/3 nieba... jaki wpłym by to miało na światopoglądy naszych praprzodków...? Jest to gromada kulista M-13, w konstelacji Herkulesa, odległa o 25tys. lat świetlnych i dobrze widoczna już w lornetce jako mglista plama światła. Zdominowana jest przez stare gwiazdy - czerwone olbrzymy, które zazwyczaj świecą 2 tysiące razy jasniej niż Słońce. Aby zdać sobie sprawę ze względnej jasności, wystarczy uświadomić sobie, że jeśli spojrzymy z M-13 wstecz na nasze Słońce, to nie będziemy go widzieć nawet przez największe teleskopy.
