W 1848 roku pewien przedsiębiorca postanowił zbudować tartak. Podczas prac na swoim ranczo jeden z robotników zatrzymał wzrok na czymś błyszczącym w wodzie niedaleko brzegu. Nie mógł uwierzyć własnym oczom gdy dotknął małej mokrej bryłki. Okazało się bowiem, że było to czyste złoto. Wiadomość o tym lotem błyskawicy rozniosła się po całych Stanach rozpoczynając gorączkę złota. Starczyło go na kilkanaście lat. Pozostałości po tym czasie można spotkać na całym południowym zachodzie. Miasta jak to, na zdjęciu zwane są \\\'ghost towns\\\'. Nikt tam nie mieszka, bo po co męczyć się na środku pustyni? Są one za to wspaniałym obiektem do fotografii.
