W roku 1908 Towarzystwo Sztuki Stosowanej w Krakowie rozpisało konkurs na projekt Kościoła w Limanowej. Rok później wybrany został projekt Zdzisława Mączyńskiego, którego realizację rozpoczęto w roku 1910 a zakończono 6 października 1918 roku, kiedy to nowa świątynia została poświęcona. Konsekracji nowego kościoła dokonał biskup tarnowski Leon Wałęga 6 października 1921 roku. Od tej pory rosło znaczenie Kościoła parafialnego w Limanowej. Łaskami słynąca figura Matki Bożej Bolesnej przyciągała liczne pielgrzymki. W dwusetną rocznicę Konstytucji 3 Maja, w 1991 roku Ojciec Święty Jan Paweł II podniósł kościół w Limanowej do godności Bazyliki mniejszej.
