Supermarine Spitfire LF Mk VIIIc - G-BKMI
Spitfire MT928 was built as MV154 (her original serial) at Southampton in 1944. She was delivered to 6 MU (Maintenance Unit) on September 15, 1944 from where she started a long trip by boat to Sydney, Australia where she arrives November 24 the same year.
She was delivered to No 2 Aircraft Depot in Richmond on November 28 and got RAAF serial A58-671 allocated. She was stored at Richmond until she was authorised for write-off on May 24, 1948. Still in her original crates she was delivered to the School of Aircraft Construction in Sydney on December 1 1948. There she was finally assembled and used for systems testing.
She was aquired by Squadron Leader 'Titus' Oates, test pilot for de Havilland Aircraft Pty in October 1961. The plann was there for restoration as memorial to the Battle of Britain pilots and as she moved to Bankstown Airport and got reassembled the plan fell through. She was sold to Sid Marshall of Marshall Airways and was destined for his museum.
When sold to Robert Lamplough she was shipped back to the UK where she arrived at Duxford in the winter of 1979. She went to Charfield, Glostershire for restoration to airworthy condition. She got registration G-BKMI during her final assembly at Filton from where she also made here first flight on May 28, 1994. She temporarily in new paint scheme in 2000 for her role in the Pearl Harbor film and got the markings of AR654 with code RF-T.
