Ballynacourty Lighthouse, Co. Waterford, Ireland. The light at Ballinacourty was first established on July 1st 1858. The building was constructed from local limestone. It was converted to Acetylene in 1929. Electrification of the light took place on the 12 February 1964.The light comprises 3 X 100W Argenta lamps. A standby generator set is also provided. When the lighthouse was converted to automatic in 1929, a full-time keeper was no longer required and P Higginbotham, who was then of retirement age, remained on as a par-time Special Keeper. This title was changed to Attendant sometime around 1936-37. Unfortunately, records of keepers go back only to 1918. However, I have a record of a child that died in 1872. She was the daughter of a lighthouse keeper at Ballinacourty. The family surname was Kennedy. The wife of John Levelle is interred at Ballinroad cemetery. She died in 1878. Her husband John was light keeper at Ballinacourty. She was from County mayo. Another keeper that predates the 1918 records is George Donleavy. He was a keeper in 1901.He was from Donegal.
