Po wojnie trzydziestoletniej, gdy Świdnica została w cesarstwie austriackim, protestanci znaleźli się w dość trudnym położeniu, m. in. gdy odebrano im kościoły. Dzięki wstawiennictwu króla szwedzkiego pozwolono w Świdnicy, Jaworze i Głogowie wybudować w połowie XVII wieku świątynie dla protestantów - ale za miastem, bez wież i z nietrwałych materiałów. Kościół w Świdnicy wzniesiono w odległości wystrzału armatniego od murów miejskich, z drewna, gliny I słomy, do jego budowy nie użyto ani jednego gwoździa.
