Opis zdjęcia
Nawet na tle dziennego nieba Księżyc ukazuje nam olbrzymią ilość szczegółów, chociaż jego fotografowanie przez duży instrument optyczny nastręcza wówczas wielu trudności. Oto fragment jego powierzchni w fazie 5 dni po nowiu. Najbardziej rzucającą się w oczy formacją jest Morze Jasności (Mare Serenitatis), prawie kołowa równina na Księżycu o powierzchni 303 tysięcy km kwadratowych, a więc porównywalnej do terytorium Polski. Na prezentowanej fotografii widzimy jak jego powierzchnia wypełniona ciemną bazaltową lawą, poprzecinana grzebieniami zastygłych lawowych fal wynurza się powoli z cienia. W wielu miejscach można dostrzec ślady zastygłych lawowych rozlewisk, gdzie front fali lawowej zdołał dotrzeć na setki metrów w górę zboczy okolicznych wzniesień. Wschodzące nad tym rejonem Słońce oświetla ostrym, ukośnym światłem położone od południa góry Haemus ciągnące się przez około 500 km, a wznoszące się ponad powierzchnię Morza Jasności do 2400 m. Jasne obszary na północ wydające się, jakby oderwane były od powierzchni Srebrnego Globu, to wierzchołki szczytów księżycowych gór Kaukaz wznoszących się ponad przyległy teren na około 6 km ! Na wschodnim wybrzeżu Morza Jasności, w pobliżu krateru Littrow wylądowała wyprawa Apollo 17. By uzmysłowić sobie skalę odwzorowania szczegółów na tym zdjęciu, warto wiedzieć, że samotny krater położony na Morzu Jasności - Bessel, ma 16 km średnicy.
