Opis zdjęcia
W 1851 roku Frederick S. Archer i Gustave Le Gray opatentowali nową metodę otrzymywania fotografii, nazwaną kolodionową. Jako nośnika mokrej emulsji użyto w niej szklanych płyt. Nowa metoda skracała czas naświetlania do kilkunastu sekund, wymagała jednak od fotografa sporej wiedzy chemicznej i zręczności. Dr Richard L. Maddox w 1871 roku wpadł na pomysł, by szklane płyty pokrywać suchą emulsją bromo- żelatynową, mniej wrażliwą na działanie czynników zewnętrznych.
