Szerszeń (Vespa) - rodzaj owadów z rodziny osowatych (Vespidae), najwięksi przedstawiciele rodziny - dorastają do 45 mm długości. Szerszenie żywią się pszczołami, ćmami i innymi dużymi owadami. Polując na owady, są głównymi reduktorami komarów, meszek, much oraz wielu szkodników ogrodów, lasów i pól uprawnych. Kiedy wzrastają larwy dziewiczych królowych, osy poszukują słodkiego pokarmu, a i same po części odżywiają się produktami bogatymi w cukier. Głównym ich pożywieniem są owady, od jajeczek do dorosłych osobników. Także posilają się spadzią drzew iglastych oraz nektarem z niektórych kwiatów, których budowa pozwala na pobranie słodkiego pokarmu. Osy społeczne mają aparat gębowy odmienny od pszczół i trzmieli, bez długiego języczka, którym mogą pobierać nektar nawet z głębokich kielichów kwiatowych. Niektóre niszczą owoce (szerszeń). Samotne i społeczne. Społeczne budują gniazda z masy papierowej, którą wytwarzają z przerobionej celulozy.
