Na świecie żyje ponad 4000 gatunków ptaków śpiewających (Oscines). Ale jak one wydają tak melodyjne głos? U człowieka głos powstaje w krtani, dzięki strunom głosowym. Ptaki również mają krtań, ale spełnia ona jedynie funkcję zaworu zabezpieczającego przed dostaniem się wody lub pokarmu do tchawicy i dalej do płuc. Śpiew ptaków pochodzą z innej struktury, leżącej dużo głębiej w ciele i nie mającej swego odpowiednika w anatomii człowieka. Tworem tym jest krtań dolna (syrinx) czyli śpiewna. Ten organ leży w dolnym rozwidleniu tchawicy, w miejscu, gdzie rozdziela się ona na dwa oskrzela prowadzące do płuc. W krtani dolnej znajduje się pojedyncza (w tchawicy) lub parzysta (w oskrzelach) tzw. błona bębenkowa oraz rozdzielająca ujścia oskrzeli błona półksiężycowata. Elementami krtani dolnej porusza zespół cienkich i silnych mięśni. Krtań dolna dzieli się na dwie połowy, które mogą być kontrolowane przez ptaki niezależnie; niektóre gatunki ptaków mogą wytwarzać 2 dźwięki jednocześnie. Niektóre ptaki śpiewające potrafią śpiewać bez przerwy przez długi czas, co może prowadzić do wniosku, że ptaki podczas śpiewu nie oddychają. W rzeczywistości uzupełniają zapas powietrza przez płytkie mini oddechy, które są skojarzone ze śpiewanymi sylabami. Podobno kanarek może wziąć do 30 takich mini oddechów w ciągu sekundy. A na zdjęciu rozśpiewany trznadel (Emberiza citrinella) :)
