Wielki Kanion to przełom rzeki Kolorado w stanie Arizona w USA przez Płaskowyż Kolorado, złożony głównie z łupków Yishnu, a także iłołupków, wapieni, piaskowców i granitowych intruzji. Znajdziemy w nim pełny przekrój geologiczny od proterozoiku (era prekambryjska) po trias (era mezozoiczna). Każda seria warstw skalnych posiada inny odcień. Skały osadowe kanionu obfitują w skamieniałości, od pierwotnych glonów do drzew, od morskich muszli po szczątki dinozaurów. Po kolorach poszczególnych warstw kanionu możemy rozpoznać ich wiek i tak: kolor pomarańczowy to pokłady mające ok 300 milionów lat, fioletowe o jakieś 35mln lat więcej natomiast czerwone zaledwie 280mln ;) a własnie prawie zapomniałem, ta wąska wstęga w samym środku to ma się rozumieć potężna rzeka Kolorado :D polecam PE/FS
