Nr. 484. Kadr przedstawia wnętrze pokoju długiego w starej bibliotece Trinity College w Dublinie... Trinity College czyli Kolegium Trójcy Świętej to uczelnia założona w roku 1592 przez królową Elżbietę I w Dublinie na terenie dawnego klasztoru Augustianów. W 1661 r - biskup Meath ofiarowuje uczelni manuskrypt Księgi z Kells a 1712 - rozpoczęto budowę Biblioteki zwanej teraz Starą (Old Library), której długi pokój widzimy na zdjęciu. W starym budynku znajduje się około 200 tysięcy spośród 3 milionów woluminów; resztę przechowuje się gdzie indziej, a każdego roku w celu rozmieszczenia nowych nabytków dostawia się nieomal kilometr półek. Czytelnia to długa na 63 metrów, wysoka, wytworna i zalana światłem sala z książkami rozmieszczonymi na dwóch poziomach. Pierwotny projekt Thomasa Burgha z początków XVIII w. przewidywał tylko jedno piętro, ale w 1859 r. podniesiono dach i podwyższono cały budynek. Księgę z Kells przewieziono ze względów bezpieczeństwa do klasztoru Kells w hrabstwie Meath, w IX w., w okresie najazdów wikingów, a po wielu tarapatach (między innymi przez pewien czas rękopis leżał zakopany w ziemi i, odkopany ok. 1007 r., stracił prawie 30 stronic) w XVII w. dotarła ona do Dublina. Na 680 stronach spisano po łacinie cztery Ewangelie Nowego Testamentu. W latach 50. Księgę z Kells rozdzielono na cztery osobne tomy i udostępniono zwiedzającym. Codziennie odwracana jest jedna strona dwóch wystawionych tomów: jeden z nich otwierany jest na stronie całkowicie iluminowanej, a drugi na tekście, także zresztą zdobionym inicjałami w formie fantastycznych zwierząt.
