Ta renesansowa świątynia należała niegdyś do najwspanialszych w stolicy. Kościół posiada największą na Starym Mieście wieżę. Zbudowany został w latach 1607-1628 jako kościół jezuitów, z inicjatywy znakomitego kaznodziei sejmowego księdza Piotra Skargi, wg projektu Jana Frankiewicza. Przy kościele powstało też kolegium jezuickie (1668). W czasie II wojny światowej świątynia została spalona, a jej mury wysadzono w powietrze. Długotrwałe prace konserwatorskie zakończono dopiero w 1973 roku.
