Nieprawdziwa jest teza, że komputery i Internet zastępują książki i gazety. Internauci i użytkownicy komputerów są bowiem najaktywniejszymi czytelnikami na rynku książek i gazet. Nie czytamy głównie z lenistwa i braku takich nawyków.(...) Kraje, w których czyta się najwięcej, to najczęściej państwa protestanckie (Szwecja, Norwegia, Wielka Brytania, Finlandia), gdzie zwyczaj powszechnego czytania gazet i książek istnieje od XIX wieku.(...) CZYTAJĄCY ŚLĄZACY- w ubiegłym roku połowa Polaków nie przeczytała ani jednej książki, zaś 30 proc. przyznało, że sięga po nią sporadycznie. Dodajmy, że wśród tytułów wymienionych przez ankietowanych jedna trzecia to podręczniki i lektury szkolne. 63 proc. Polaków w ciągu 12 miesięcy nie splamiło się kupnem książki, po gazety sięga 15 proc. Z badań Instytutu Książki i Czytelnictwa wynika, że w 10 proc. gospodarstw domowych nie ma żadnej książki.(...) Najgorzej czytelnictwo wygląda na wsi, na tzw. ścianie wschodniej oraz w Wielkopolsce. NAJWIĘCEJ czyta się na Górnym Śląsku, bo to region najbardziej zurbanizowany. Tam tradycje czytelnictwa sięgają - podobnie jak w Niemczech czy Czechach - XIX wieku. Mitem jest przekonanie, że społeczeństwo nie czyta, bo biednieje.
