Nazwa miejscowości wywodzi się z czasów królowej Bony Sforza d\'Aragona (1494-1557), która upodobała to miejsce, nazywając je "Strada bella" (piękna droga). Początki parafii starobelskiej sięgają 1612 r., kiedy to ówczesny właściciel Strabli, stolnik wiski Adam Turowski uposażył ją w trzy włóki ziemi. W 1629 r. dokonał on kolejnej fundacji, tym razem murowanego kościoła. Późniejsi właścicieli Strabli potwierdzili tą fundację. Kościół odbudowany w 1766 r. W okresie wojny rosyjsko - polskiej i Insurekcji Kościuszkowskiej ówczesny proboszcz przekazał część kościelnych przedmiotów srebrnych na rzecz 38 szwadronu strzelców konnych (1792) i batalionu strzelców pieszych (1794), które zostały uformowane przez generał - majora Michała Hieronima hr. Starzeńskiego, starostę brańskiego.
