Kościół jest jedną z największych świątyń Ziemi Kłodzkiej. Budowa kościoła przypada na lata 1344 - 1490. Powstaje wówczas kamienna, trójnawowa bazylika siedmioprzęsłowa z trzema absydami silnie oszkarpowanymi, z dwoma potężnymi wieżami na zachodnich przęsłach naw bocznych. Do kościoła przylega szereg kaplic: Ogrójec (XV/XVI w.), Kaplica żałobna (1683 r.) oraz kaplica św. Jakuba (1500 r.) połączona z klasztorem, rozpiętym nad arkadą przejściem. Budowę prowadzili joannici z inicjatywy i funduszy arcybiskupa praskiego Arnosta z Pardubic. W 1562 r. zajęli kościół protestanci. Przebudowę kościoła w duchu baroku podjęli jezuici w I - szej ćw. XVII w. Nastąpiło wówczas szereg zmian architektonicznych, przybył bogaty, barokowy wystrój wnętrza. Autorem tych zmian był głównie, znany architekt i dekorator Krzysztof Tausch (1673 - 1731). Na szczególną uwagę zasługują dzieła sztuki o bezwzględnej wartości artystycznej: gotyckie madonny - XIV w. w ołtarzu głównym, Madonna z czyżykiem z XV w. w nawie południowej oraz barokowa ambona z 1717 r., dzieło mistrza Michała Klahra Starszego, jednocześnie autora konfesjonałów i organów.
