Wszystkie mrówki z podrodzaju Formica zaliczamy do gatunków leśnych, potocznie zwanych rudymi mrówkami leśnymi. Tworzą one bardzo liczne kolonie, sięgające nawet miliona osobników w przypadku kolonii polyginicznych. Kolejną cechą charakterystyczną dla tego podrodzaju jest budowanie kopców z igliwia oraz małych gałązek. Kopce takie mogą osiągać bardzo duże rozmiary, nawet ponad metr wysokości. Wyróżniamy formy monoginiczne i poliginiczne; w przypadku tych drugich często mamy do czynienia z systemami polikalicznymi. Mrówki te są agresywne w stosunku do innych mrówek i nie tolerują na swoim terytorium innych gniazd swojego oraz innych gatunków
