Kiedy w 1678 r. spłonął kościoł ewangelicki świątynię odbudować mieli protestanci w ciągu jednej doby aby spełnić warunek biskupa łuckiego. Ewangelicy wypełnili ów nakaz i zmontowali budowlę z przygotowanych wcześniej "prefabrykatów". Ten najstarszy drewniany kościół w siedleckiem, zachowuje tradycyjny układ cmentarza, w którym zmarłych grzebano w obrębie sfery sacrum wyznaczonej przez ogrodzenie kościoła. Najstarsze nagrobki Szkotów sprowadzonych do Węgrowa przez Bogusława Radziwiłła pochodzą z XVII i XVIII wieku. Modrzewiowy kościół pełnił funkcję głównej świątyni parafii (do 1769 r. także dla protestantów z Warszawy)
