Sarna występuje zarówno w wielkich, zwartych kompleksach leśnych, jak i na zupełnie bezleśnych terenach. Wyróżnia się przez to dwa ekotypy tj. sarnę leśną i sarnę polną. Odmienne środowisko życia tych dwóch ekotypów doprowadziły do różnic w ekologii, behawiorze, a nawet morfologii i anatomii. Stwierdzono, że: + pojemność żwacza sarny polnej jest większa niż u sarny leśnej; + sarna polna ma dłuższe kości kończyn w stosunku do sarny leśnej; + parostki saren polnych są mocniejsze i ładniej wykształcone; + suknia sarny polnej jest jaśniejsza i bardziej rudawa niż u sarny leśnej; + zimą sarna polna prowadzi stadny tryb życia przebywając w dużych stadach (rudlach), co jest nie spotykane u sarny leśnej, która w tym samym okresie bytuje pojedynczo lub w niewielkich stadkach; + sarna polna charakteryzuje większy dystans ucieczki (kilkaset metrów), po czym staje i obserwuje napastnika, sarna leśna przejawia natomiast tendencje do ukrywania się. Stada saren polnych zagonione do lasu, po pewnym czasie wracają na pola. Już samo zapędzenie saren do lasu jest utrudnione gdyż zazwyczaj sarny te niechętnie opuszczają tereny otwarte, a najczęściej gdy zostaną zapędzone pod ścianę lasu przemieszczają się i uciekają wzdłuż niej. Podobnie jest z sarną leśną , która zapędzona na pola wraca do lasu. Krzyżowanie obu tych ekotypów w naturze jest więc utrudnione co w kolejnych pokoleniach jeszcze bardziej zaznacza różnice między sarną polną i leśną. Cóż może właśnie mamy okazję podglądać ewolucję w trakcie specjacji, która w przyszłości doprowadzi do rozdzielenia się tych dwóch ekotypów na odrębne gatunki.
