Goniądz założony przez książąt mazowieckich należał do Ziemi Wiskiej. W 1426 r. został opanowany przez W. ks. Witolda. Od 1509 r. należał do Radziwiłłów. W 1569 r. powrócił do Mazowsza. W 1667 r. powstał tu urząd grodzki, a w 1671 r siedziba starostwa. Parafia Goniądz powstała z fundacji W. ks. Witolda przed 1430 r. Pierwsza świątynia nosiła tytuł Wniebowzięcia NMP, św. Jana Chrzciciela i św. Agnieszki. Kościół ten padł ofiarą zniszczeń w czasie potopu szwedzkiego, wkrótce został odbudowany. W 1775 r. rozpoczęto budowę nowego drewnianego kościoła pw. św. Ducha. Fundatorami światyni byli bp przemyski Antoni Betański, tytularny proboszcz Goniądza i Izabela z Poniatowskich Branicka. Dnia 26 września 1921 r. kościół ten doszczętnie spłonął. Obecny kościół zbudowany w latach 1922 - 1924 według projektu Oskara Sosnowskiego przez ks. Adama Abramowicza.
