Skupienie jest przesunięciem naszego duchowego ogniska i dostrojeniem całej duszy do tego, co znajduje się poza i ponad nami. To nawrócenie albo raczej zwrócenie całej swojej istoty do rzeczy duchowych i Boga. A ponieważ rzeczy duchowe są proste, skupienie jest zarazem uproszczeniem stanu naszego umysłu i naszej działalności duchowej. Prawdziwe skupienie poznaje się po jego owocach, którymi są pokój, wewnętrzne milczenie, uciszenie serca. Według T.Mertona, skupienie nie jest próżnią, ale raczej obecnością i tak je powinniśmy postrzegać. Kiedy skupienie staje się dla nas celem samym w sobie, zamykamy się nie w wewnętrznej komnacie, ale schodzimy do wewnętrznego więzienia, w którym zamiast przesiąkniętego niebem powietrza, panuje stęchlizna naszych własnych wysiłków.
