Mija rok od spektakularnego wydarzenia jakim było pojawienie się komety 17P Holmes, która była być może najbardziej niezwykłych kometą naszych czasów. 23/24 października ub. r nastąpił gigantyczny rozbłysk tej komety, która w ciągu kilku godzin zwiększyła swoją jasność 1,5 miliona razy !!! Kometa podążając w odległe obszary Układu Słonecznego stała się wkrótce największym jego obiektem, bowiem sferyczna głowa Komety Holmes spuchła do rozmiarów ponad 4,5 miliona kilometrów, co uczyniło ten subtelny, pyłowy obłok wielokrotnie większym od Słońca. !!! Rozpraszające światło słoneczne pył i gaz pochodzą z niezwykle aktywnego jądra komety, której średnica przed rozbłyskiem w ostatnich dniach października była szacowana na zaledwie 3,4 kilometra. Przez zewnętrzne obszary głowy bez trudu widoczne są gwiazdy, natomiast samo jądro zanurzone jest wewnątrz skondensowanego, jasnego obszaru. Jasny punkt na dole kadru to gwiazda Mirfak (Alfa Persei), oświetlająca komecie powolną drogę przez gwiazdozbiór Perseusza. Mirfak otoczony jest przez otwartą gromadę gwiazd Melotte20, znajdującą się w odległości około 600 lat świetlnych. W momencie wykonywania zdjęcia kometa znajdowała się w odległości 380 mln km od Słońca i 250 mln km od Ziemi. Parametry: 27.11 2007, godz. 22.05-23.11 CSE, Niedźwiady.
