W 1812 szwajcarski uczony Johann Burckhardt \"odkrył\" Petrę. Przybył do niej podążając za pogłoskami i legendami Beduinów (coś jak Hiram Bingham i Machu Picchu..) Petra to stolica królestwa Nabatejczyków, położona w południowo-zachodniej części obecnej Jordanii. Pierwsze wzmianki o nim pochodzą z IV w. p.n.e.! Do miasta wchodzi się przez wąski wąwóz...wychodzący wprost na najsłynniejszy (obecnie) budynek. Ciekawe, czy tak właśnie widział to Burckhardt....
