Jesienią roku 1986 podjąłem próbę znalezienia odpowiedzi na pytanie „czy prowincja masz szansę?’. Z silnym przekonaniem, że jeśli nawet ma, to nie w tej chwili. To był jakiś odprysk tego, o czym myślałem w końcu lat 70-tych, czyli fotografii socjologicznej. Tylko że inaczej pojmowanej niż przez dominujący wtedy nurt. W przypadku tych poszukiwań fotograficznej odpowiedzi na podstawowe pytanie, najpierw zebrałem socjologiczną diagnozę zagadnienia. Żyjący wtedy jeszcze prof. Jan Szczepański napisał esej „Czy prowincja ma szansę”. Głowna teza była taka, że powinna mieć szansę, bo dystrybucja talentów jest niezależna od miejsca zamieszkania. I niewydolny system oświatowy na prowincji sprawia, że Polska traci swoje talenty. Niemało wniósł prof. Jan Malanowski, którego badania stopnia egalitaryzmu w Polsce obalały przeświadczenie, że realny socjalizm egalitaryzował społeczeństwo polskie. Na to była twarda podkładka z badań demografa, docenta (wtedy) Pohoskiego, z których wynikało, że dzieci wiejskie – mimo punktów za pochodzenie – mają o wiele mniejsze szanse na studia niż te z dużych miast. Ja te abstrakcje starałem się przełożyć na język obrazu. Na tym zdjęciu widać dzieci ze szkoły w Pupkowiznie na Kurpiach. Listopad 1986. Ciekaw jestem, jak potoczyły się ich losy, kim są dzisiaj.
