Klasztor założony został przez cystersów w 1258 r. z fundacji Księcia Opolskiego Władysława. Na początku wybudowano wczesnogotycki kościół bazylikowy oraz klasztor na planie czworoboku.W latach 1680-1790 dokonano przebudowy i rozbudowy kościoła w stylu barokowym. W 1730 roku dobudowano pałac opacki. Od 1744 r. funkcjonowało prowadzone przez cystersów gimnazjum, a od 1781 r. studium filozoficzno-teologiczne, które było jedyną tego rodzaju uczelnią na Górnym Śląsku, gdzie nauki udzielano bezpłatnie. Bogata była także klasztorna biblioteka. Pod koniec XVIII w. liczyła blisko 12 000 woluminów. Opactwo cystersów w Rudach bardzo pozytywnie przyczyniło się do rozwoju kultury materialnej i duchowej regionu Górnego Śląska. Zrujnowany wojną z Napoleonem, budżet Prus potrzebował gotówki. W dniu 26 listopada 1810 nastąpiła kasata klasztoru na mocy edyktu króla pruskiego Fryderyka Wilhelma II. W 1812 r. dobra klasztorne otrzymał landgraf von Hessen Kassel, który nigdy w Rudach nie zamieszkał. W latach 1813-1814 w klasztorze znajdował się szpital wojskowy. Rannymi opiekowało się między innymi 10 mnichów, którzy po likwidacji szpitala zostali wypędzeni. W 1981 r. uzyskano pewne fundusze na ratowanie pocysterskiego zabytku. W ciągu 4 lat odgruzowano piwnice, komnaty, korytarze, wyremontowano sklepienia piwnic i odtworzono stropy. Jednak remonty i zabezpieczenia zabytku nie wystarczyły, popadał w coraz większą ruinę, nie znalazł się bowiem gospodarz, który mógłby przywrócić mu dawną świetność. Stan taki trwał aż do roku 1998, kiedy to Skarb Państwa przekazał cały kompleks klasztorno-pałacowy Diecezji Gliwickiej. Obecnie w kompleksie trwają prace przy odbudowie i renowacji samego obiektu jak i otaczającego go parku.
