Kroměříž, miasto zamku arcybiskupiego, zabytku wpisanego na listę UNESCO i pięknych ogrodów, lecz u mnie zabytek techniki: budynek elektrowni wodnej, którego budowę rozpoczęto w 1920 roku, a do użytku oddany został w lipcu 1923. Dwie zainstalowane tu turbiny o średnicy 2,2 metra w ciągu roku wytwarzały 5 milionów kilowatogodzin energii. Wynalazcą przełomowej turbiny wodnej pozwalającej produkować duże ilości energii przy niewielkiej różnicy poziomów przy spadku wody był Austriak Viktor Kaplan (1866-1934), wykładowca na Politechnice w Brnie. W swoim czasie była szczytowym osiągnięciem w tej dziedzinie techniki w Czechach, a i jedną z najnowocześniejszych na świecie. Pierwszą turbinę Kaplana w Polsce zainstalowano w 1926 roku w elektrowni Gródek.
