Aparat Sony DSC P31, teleskop Newtona 90/800, filtr słoneczny Baader Planetarium ND-5, okular 20mm -Plama słoneczna jest regionem na powierzchni Słońca (fotosfera), którego cechami są temperatura niższa niż temperatura otoczenia i intensywna aktywność magnetyczna. Mimo swej oślepiającej jasności (temperatura ok. 5000 kelwinów) kontrast z otoczeniem o temperaturze ok. 6000 kelwinów powoduje, że regiony te są wyraźnie widoczne jako ciemne miejsca. Jednak gdyby zostały one odizolowane od otaczającej fotosfery byłyby jaśniejsze niż łuk elektryczny.
