The artistic merit of this photograph is fantastic! There is so much going on in this picture, it's impossible to take it all in and capture everything I see. Indeed, the humor of the moment is very clear. From the perspective you've made this photograph, you've place the viewer in an authoritative position -- either as God himself, or at the very least that of the abbot. When seeing from this perspective, we can notice that one of the friars/fraters is walking on the straight line, facing forward, paying ultimate attention to his discipline and behavior. On the other hand, the second friar has gone off the path, is engaged with us -- perhaps noticing us, the viewers, in our authoritative position and seems a bit happier and unconcerned about the 'rules' and 'orders' he's perhaps been given. Having the different pattern in the stone pathway in the top-right actually solidifies this mischeviousness to me -- he's not quite walking completely astray (i.e. away from the straight path laid before him), but he's certainly pushing the boundaries. This break in the order of the larger part of the path is a very important part of the story, then. There are a few technical nit-picks that I can see but are likely not there in the original (sharpness is a little softer than I imagine is there in the original). But those are minor, and really, ultimately, unimportant. I see this image as an interpretation of the parable of the Prodigal Son, really. One of the best street scenes I've ever seen (...). This is one of those "I wish I'd made this shot" moments for me. Very, very nicely done!
