In November 1999, during the run-up to the 2000 presidential elections in the United States, candidate George W. Bush was asked by a Boston television station to name the leaders in four hot spots around the world, beginning with the president of Chechnya. Bush could not come up with Aslan Maskhadov nor the leaders of India and Pakistan, managing only "Lee" for the President of Taiwan (Lee Teng-hui).
